Emma Pillsbury’s style is as quirky and unexpected as it is classic and preppy. Many of her outfits can be distilled into three simple elements - the blouse, cardigan and skirt. The blouse almost always has a bow of course, the cardigan might be appliqued, beaded, print or plain and the skirt is so often a pencil skirt .

Keep colors bright and pair them in unexpected combinations to keep the look young and fresh. Yellow and blue and taupe and coral are two of Emma’s most notable color pairings. Add touches of whimsy with an artistically placed brooch or a charming critter belt or bracelet.

Emma adores prints and will wear polka dots, plaids, florals and classic stripes even mixing them on occasion. In fact when it comes to Emma and prints the choices are almost limitless so have fun and opt for a quirky print on your cardigan, blouse or even pencil skirt - ladybugs, bows and owls are just some of Emma’s favorites. This navy and pink pony print bow blouse from Modcloth definitely fits the bill.

Although Emma has an unfathomable amount of Kate Spade, Anthropologie, Milly NY and J. Crew clothing in her closet for a Lima district guidance counsellor, you can get her look on a more realistic budget by shopping at Modcloth, ASOS, H&M, Topshop and even Forever 21.

Accessories are often vintage or vintage-inspired so lookout for sweater clips, enamel flower brooches and antique bracelets. Thrift stores, yard sales and flea markets provide excellent opportunities to pick up some Pillsbury-style accessories at bargain prices.

While it often seems like the foundation of Emma’s wardrobe is the J. Crew no. 2 pencil skirt (she owns it in a spectacular array of colors), she also frequently wears flared a-line silhouettes as well. Choose bold prints or a color-block style such as this one.

Shoes must be mary janes or t-bars, of course, and coordinate with your ensemble.

And finally, if there’s one motto Emma lives by, it’s ‘if in doubt add another bow’. Whether that’s a giant bow across the front of your dress, a second added to your blouse or a neat bow belt, wear those bows proudly and you can’t go wrong. Follow these rules and there’s no need to accessorize with a hand sanitizer or an eye-popping assortment of startlingly worded pamphlets to be unmistakably Emma Pillsbury in your styling.
